Sorry its been awhile since I've updated the 'ol blog. Life has been incredibly stressful and challenging for the last 5 months and I'm working to make things all better. I haven't had the time for my toys lately, but I've been spending a lot of time with my kids (well, I always spend a lot of time with them, we've just been doing other stuff). Anyway, we've been playing Pokepark: Pikachu's Adventure, and I finished it tonite. I thought it was a pretty fun game. Hope to be back soon with some of the "normal" stuff!

All Your Lego's Are Belong To Us: A look at some Not-Lego's

I won some ebay auctions from some sellers in the Hong Kong area advertising brick sets that fit Lego. I love the Engrish on those posts. Some household brand names include Enlightened Child, Kazi, and LoonGon. Actually these sets are pretty cool. Some of the Chinese sets you can get are basically Lego copied sets with the box pictures and all, these were all original designs. The Kazi sets actually have "Kazi" molded on the tubes of thier bricks, lego style. The other companies...uh, not so much. There were 25-35 pieces per set depending on the kit,most parts fit good, although there was some "flash" on pieces, and one small round piece I had was warped beyond fit. Well, I won some kits for one cents, and others for a buck, so I don't think I'm paying for quality control....

These kool little tanks are made by Kazi, I got them for around a buck each plus shipping. They will make great little drone tanks for some future Lego mega battle.

Here are two different missile trucks, and 2 mine detector vehicles, all also made by Kazi. These are small kits, in "scale" with the tanks but of course a minifig towers over them, so they will also make good drone vehicles. Of course, in world of Lego and Lego knock-offs, does it really matter? They just drive!

Lets get serious now, here comes the Military. These fill an area that Lego dosn't do. I think the mine detector vehicle is an Elightened Child set, and the cannon in the middle might be too, although they don't look like they came off the same production line. The biker with the rifle is a Kazi set. The cannon guy looks very happy to be blasting away with that thing, and the biker has a smug look on his face. The mine detector dude dosn't look too thilled though, I guess he was the guy who showed up late and got the lame vehicle.

On to the civilians. I'm not sure what kind of construction vehicle this represents, but the guy looks happy to operate it anyway. He picks up loose Lego's to take back to Pirate's Industrial Park. It's made by some company called LoonGon. The round section on top rotates all the way around. The police boat and the racing car are Enlightened Child kits. Boy, the cop looks like he's gonna meet his quota today, but the race car driver is all business. The strange little spaceship is made by Kazi and more in scale with the tanks and missile trucks. I think the design was put together by a guy with a bits box and nothing to do for an hour.

Kool Stuff in Kenosha

This past weekend had some kool stuff going on, on Saturday, me and the kids hit the Kenosha Kite Festival. Believe it or not, I find some kind of inner peace flying kites, I usually pick up one or two here and there if they look cool. There was a lot of neat kites and the kids had fun, especially when they had candy drop from a bag in the air pinata style.

Then we hit the Kenosha Public Museum on Sunday to check out the Model Train Expo. They had a lot of neat set-ups there, Including a huge one in the seminar room. The kids liked looking at the stuff, although by the fourth layout they had enough. My Dad used to have a good sized set up back in the day, so I enjoyed checking them out.

Toy Story Bucket O Soldiers

Got a Toy Story 3 Bucket O Soldiers...I must say, these guys are awesome! Most of them are similar to the classic Timmee/Processed Plastics soldiers, but with new crisp sculpts. The bucket contains 72 pieces that include 7 Sarge figs, 7 soldier standing with pisol/binocs, 7 kneeling riflemen, 7 riflemen laying down, 7 riflemen looking upwards, 7 riflemen at the ready, 7 mine sweepers, 7 bazooka men, 7 mortar soldiers, 7 stab with rifle soldiers and 2 paratroopers, both unique sculpts that I'd love to get as regular infanty. Well worth it, check out the pics!

Had to do a battle for Star Wars Day! Since I'm starting a series of battles this summer featuring Rhen Var and Tatooine, I thought I'd kick off Rhen Var using LEGO Star Wars and ToyMallet 40cents rules. Doug commanded the defending Clones while I fought with the invading CIS. True to history, the Battle Droids won the day.

Free Comic Book Day!

Ahh...the first Saturday of May...Free Comic Book Day! The kids posed with some Super Heroes like Spidey, Pheonix and Batman at Heroes & Dreams and then we stopped at Rockhead's for a few more titles. The kids picked up stuff like Shrek, Archie and Sonic, I grabbed Iron Man and G.I.Joe.

Here is a robot I found at the Dollar Tree from that movie Planet 51 that three people went to see. I'm naming it 1Rover-1 after 7Zark-7's little buddy... I thought it would be a cool mine detonating drone for Combat Storm... little outa scale, but who cares when you're using plastic army men!

My 6mm Human Armies

I thought these might be cool to show off, I did these forces sometime in 2006. Both are Terran Armies, made up of GW Epic Infantry, Rhinos and Landraiders, repainted MechWarrior Clix miniatures (planned as super heavy vehicles), Hover Vehicles from Fortress Figures, a couple GZG Hovercraft and VTOLS and stuff I cast from Colony Castings molds from resin. I might use some of these for my first games of Armor Grid:Mech Attack! because I'm lacking the time and motivation to cut out all the neat paper ones, plus these haven't seen action since they were painted....

I picked up this Maisto Power Racer at Walmart thinking that it would look good next to 28mm miniatures, here is a pic of one with Mega Minis' Swat Miniatures.

This one is from Jada, it comes in a collector's box with a window and was held in place with 2 screws. Heck with that, off with the screws! It's a Police Escalade, I think it makes a decent fit too.

Apache AH-64A Helicopter for 15mm

I thought this might look in scale for 15mm figures, it's an Apache AH-64A from th Maisto Tailwinds line of aircraft. The figures are Modern US Troops from Rebel Minis. It looks like one of the figures could fit in the cockpit, that's what gave me the idea of picking it up.

Here is the Gunship from the Transformers Crossovers line. It's probably the closest I'll get to having one that looks decent next to the miniatures. I'll probably glue it so it dosn't transform anymore and that way its more "stable" and then dirty it up so it's ready for war!

We had them at work, and then I kept my eye on them when we put them on clearance for $20, then they went to $15, and then one morning I was leaving work and the Department Manager said "Hey Rusty, I think we brought those copters you wanted down some more." Sure enough, EIGHT BUCKS! Wish we had more than two...I think I'm going to use them as carriers for my big robot game...

Played a solo game of my World War Z mod for Combat Storm (work in progress)....This first battle involves the Zombies coming across the border of the Dragon Republic, which encounters a Green Army force on patrol outside of Peaceville. After 5 turns, the soldiers had been overrun but managed to get head shots on 33 of the 50 Zombies which came in waves of 10 each turn. I posted some Zombie rules for this mod on the Combat Storm Yahoo Group and I got the figs from an eBay listing
They have Green, Blue, White and Clear Zombies in thier eBay store, and for 1.00 a pack of Army Men scale Zombies it's hard to beat!

I got these cool plastic figures from 2hockeyfans on ebay, they are about 2 inches tall and will fit in great with my plastic army men for a new campaign...Combat Storm World War Z! When I got them I based them on matte board squares I had cut up, then I added a little sand and some blood spots and bam! New Army! BRAINS!!!!

Big Additions to my Clone Wars armies!

Got around to finishing a bunch more troops for my Clone Wars games, some I used at Rock-Con but most are fresh...

First, here's a squad of 10 Clone Troopers, most converted into new poses, and three Heavy Clone Troopers.

Next we have a squad of 10 Clone Scout Troopers. I used a couple Kashyyyk Clones and the rest were Original Trilogy Scout Troopers all painted up in cammo.

Here are 27 Clone Snow Troopers, with thier Arc Trooper leaders. I repainted a bunch of ESB Snow Troopers to look more like Clones, and used conversions to represent the Arc Troopers.

Three B.A.R.C. Speeders. I can't remeber where they came from, maybe an Action Fleet set. The riders used to be all brown colored but I replaced the heads and painted them up Clone white, then mounted them on bases.

Two I.S.P. Speeders from the WOTC line, I repainted the drivers and added more color and detail to the Speeders.

I knew I'd find use for this Void Tiger APC that would make me happy...I turned it into what I call an AT-TT (All Terrain Troop Transport). The gun on its back is from an AOTC Hasbro action figure.

Two Clone AT-ST's. The walkers are the old MPC model kits, then I added some plastics to them so they don't look exactly like Empire era Scout Walkers.

Now for some heavy firepower...two A5 Juggernauts a.k.a. Turbo Tanks that will carry troops into battle quickly! I got these a few years ago, I think they were one of the last toys made for the Action Fleet line. They open up to reveal a Kashyyyk playset, but I superglued all that jive shut. For painting I just used a Magic Wash mix and that's all they really needed to go from shiny toy to "used" military equipment. I lost the turret for one over the years, luckily I seem to have an eternal supply of those AOTC tripod guns. I didnt glue the front so it opens to simulate a platform for the troops to run down!

I didn't want the CIS to feel left out, so I converted some of these Techno Union Warriors and repainted them. I might use them as an elite squad or leaders for masses of Battle Droids.

One of the WOTC lines had these Bulk Loading Droids and they looked like they would fit in with the CIS...I repositioned some of the arms and I'll probably use them as upgraded Super Battle Droids.

Finally, I sliced up a couple of warped Homing Spider Droids and added the body to these resin Kryomek Grav Tanks, them glued a few of those Buck Rogers board game turrets to the side for added firepower...Bam! CIS Homing Tanks!

I've done three battles on Yavin 4 and one on Kashyyyk, so the next few battles will be on Rhen Var...I liked that part in the Clone Wars X Box game and the levels on Battlefront so once the terrain is ready the next few battles shall commence!!

We got the new Clone Wars Turbo Tank in last night, it looks way cool...I snapped a couple pics. It's got a price tag of 99.98...so I think I'm sticking with my two Action Fleet sized ones as A5 Juggernauts. Still wished I got one of those hundred dollar AT-TE's from a year or two ago....

Also got the second wave of Marvel Secret Wars 25th anniversary packs, issues 4, 7 and 8 (dont know why they skipped 5/6...) I think the Spider Girl fig is pretty hot! (And these kids think Spidey came up with the black costume design himself....)

Quick Battlefield Evo Comparison Shots

For someone on the TMP...quick shots of BF:Evo figs next to some figs that may or not be compatible...I think some would match up better if the BF:Evo figs had bigger heads...

Combat Storm at Rock-Con!

Slot 2: 9am-1pm sat. regular Combat Storm game, Green Vs. Tan...I will be more than happy to let new players jump in at the beginning of a turn, so you don't have to be there right at 9am.

Slot 3: 2pm-6pm sat. Combat Storm Star Wars Clone Wars mod: The battle rages on Kashyykk! I better get to finishing up my Clone Wars mod, It's been a work in progress since like May!

Army Men Krylon Tutorial

Okay, so I end up with a lot of Army Men of different manufacturers and shades but same sizes. So to make a more uniform appearence I decided to try some Krylon Fusion. I think the results are good!

See? Similar sizes, different shades...I'm not picky about it when its an outside battle of hundreds of troops getting things thrown at them, but I want to have a more uniform look for the tabletop.

STEP 1: I made a bath of soap or detergent and warm water and poured the hapless victims in because plastics usually have residue from a mold release spray when they come outa the factory. I let them sit a little while while I played Star Wars Battlefront.

STEP 2: After they were rinsed off and dried (I wrapped them in paper towels and then I used a hairdryer to blow off the water) I took them outside. I had bought Krylon Fusion Cammo. Krylon Fusion bonds to plastic at the molecular level, and I had great results from a can of Fusion blue when I was doing my Cobra Troops. I'm using Olive for the green soldiers, and Khaki for the tan soldiers.

STEP 3: I layed the soldiers face down and did a spray towards the top of thier helmets, and then went to thier feet side and sprayed again. I find that this helps get paint in some of the crevaces that you can't hit by just spraying from one side. After I did that to the Tan, I hit the Green troops with olive. When I was done with that I flipped the Tans over and hit them from both sides, then flipped over the Green and hit them from both sides. I wasn't too worried if I missed a spot here and there, if the majority of the figure is one color it's really not that noticeable when you have a squad of ten soldiers together.

Yay!! Different Soldiers that look like they belong together! I'll do a similar pictorial when I finish touching up my vehicles...

Turn 0 of the Group Battle Completed!

My Combat Storm Yahoo Group is having a group battle, I'm moving the troops and uploading maps, pics and position info, and the players post what they want their squads to do. We did a Turn "0" just for movement since the battleground is big, so we are going into Turn 1 with movement and shooting. If anyone wants to join the group and get in on the action we are allowing "reinforcements" at the beginning of each turn...Here are a couple pics of the action so far....

Dr.Destruction's Haunted Forest

Took the kids to Jerry Smith's Pumpkin Farm on Saturday, mostly to go to Dr. Destruction's Haunted Forest...when Halloween starts to roll around, the kids always say "when are we going to see Dr. Destruction?"...ah, my young Padawans! Well sometimes at night I find our Webkinz sitting there with thier tags ripped off for the code to the website, and I kept bringing them to Management and security and expressing my concerns...well they finally made a case with a key so that the tags won't disapear anymore...I guess you can change the world, one toy at a time! ;)

Cheap Terrain Mat!

I'm going to be running a Combat Storm battle with the squads being run by some members of the Combat Storm Wargames Yahoo Group. So I needed to set up the city in the garage, cause it may be there for a little while. I thought I'd make a mat for the battle, so here it is:

First I grabbed a couple yellow tablecloths from the dollar store....

Then I spread them out and taped them down. Notice the tape on the tablecloth? Thats what happens when you don't cut the bag open carefully...

Then I broke out the spraypaint cans and sprayed on some features like roads and ponds, and threw a couple hills on it....

Then the fun part...I set up the city with buildings, palm trees, walls, sandbags and all that. Once I generate the squads and assign them to the players, we can get this thing started!

Scale Reference for Handful of Heroes

I picked up a couple packs of the Handful of Heroes, thinking I'd paint them up for a superhero game someday (I know, I can get prepainted ones but I never kept track of the clicks, and I don't feel like tracking them all down now...) and thought I'd take a couple pics with miniatures in case anyone wanted to get an idea of scale...

Here are a few: Iron Man, Juggernaut, Spider-Man, World War Hulk, The Beast...Spidey, Iron Man and Beast scale nice with each other, but Juggy and Hulk are way undersized...

Here's Iron Man, a Mega Minis Swat mini, Spidey, a GW Space Marine and Hawkeye...the Swat mini fits in great, man Hawkeye has some long legs...

Here's Venom, the swat, Hulk, Marine, and Juggy. Venom does OK with the swat but the Hulk and Juggy look they need to find some steroids....

Here's the ones I have all assembled: WW Hulk, Gladiator Hulk, Venom, Rhino, Spidey, Iron Man, Original Iron Man, Deadpool, Juggy, Armegeddon, the Beast, Green Goblin, X-Ray, Hawkeye and Black Panther. With the exception of real big guys like Hulk and Juggy, I think they'd all work together. Of course it depends who draws them, like I've seen Venom bigger than Spidey, and then I've seen him Hulk sized against Spidey.

We've gotten plenty of the $10, $15, and $20 accessories (which I thought wouldn't move fast without pets in stock, but not only did they fly off the shelves, some folks come in a fill multiple shopping carts full of them, probably for eBay...).

Combat Storm Terminator Game

Arrriight! Time to test the Terminators out in Combat Storm. I sat down and worked out some point values and stats for these bad boys and the results were pretty satisfying....Doug took command of the Soldiers and I controlled the Terminator force. Because of the high Terminator point costs (and smaller table we were using) I didnt use them all. The Terminator force consisted of 3 T-600's, 4 T-800's, and 2 T-1s. The humans consisted of 2 squads of 10 Riflemen, 1 squad of 10 Special Forces, 2 Anti-Armor Troops, 2 Support Infantry, 1 Sniper and 2 Tanks. Originally I was going to use 3 T-800's but we decided the Special Forces could parachute in at anytime during the Human movement phase so I added in the fourth T-800. So for all purposes, against the Termainators add 100 pts. to the Army if using the parachute rule.
The Battle went well, the Humans took advantage of cover and even got too lucky in hand to hand. I made a self-repair rule for the machines, so sometimes when it looked like a Terminator was weak he would recover a few wounds and look good as new in the next turn. In the end of the 5th turn it was almost evenly matched: The Humans had 13 soldiers left and the Terminators had 3, but we counted them as 10 with the wounds they still had left. If the game had gone any longer, the Humans would have probably won, being able to gang up in close combat and the way I roll dice (not so hot) they would have lucked out....

Combat Storm Industrial City Battle

Another battle between the Green and the Tan! The Tan advanced on the engineering section of an industrial city hoping to knock a hole in the Green Army's war effort. The Green army had some troops on patrol who responded to the Tan threat...sounds like a game of Combat Storm! As this was my friend Doug's first game of CS we used basic squads of Riflemen, and then added a MG and Anti-Armor. To make it more exciting, I added a soldier with a radio to each side to call for the Demolition Soldiers' mortar, and a Flame Thrower soldier who isn't in the rules, but I used special weapon soldier stats and a flame template for the weapon which acts like the other template weapons. We also had two extra 5 man squads of Riflemen that were reinforcements that could enter the battlefield at the beginning of a player's turn.
As the game progressed, it looked like the Doug Tan were dominating, and he was always making his reaction rolls so soldiers were jumping out of the mortar blasts. Everytime the Green used a special weapon, they got wiped out afterward. By turn three, the Green had brought out the reinforcements which were decimated quickly. The Tan were getting overconfident, and Doug never brought out his reinforcements, figuring he wouldnt need them.
After the loss of the Greens radioman, the Demolitions soldier threw a grenade on the Tan's last tank and then the last Green tank finished it off. While I ended up with one damaged tank and two soldiers, the Tan couldnt field thier reinforcements because the Riflemen wouldn't be able to take out the tank...technically the Green had won, but because I had two soldiers left and the Tan had 11, we called it a draw. The industrial city remains contested...

New Modern/Near Future Minis from Acheson Creations

Here are some pics of some new miniatures from Acheson Creations...There are two "West Hollywood" type robbers, a Thug with a hoodie and shotgun, a thug with a mohawk and two guns, and a gas masked trooper that I'm going to use as a Zombie disposal type. These were sculpted by Alix Elder and I picked up the greens and rights a few years ago, but didn't get a chance to do much with them. After a chat with Craig from Acheson Creations at Little Wars, I gave them to him to add to his miniature lines...soon he's going to do the rest of the near future human types, and then the WWII-ish looking goblins that I'll use for some Wierd War games...

TERMINATOR Army for Combat Storm

Another project finished: My TERMINATOR force that I'm going to use in Combat Storm! This army consists of a group of T-600's, some T-800's with converted weapons, four T-1's and a Hunter-Killer. I have a comparison pic below so I think they fit in with my plastic army men pretty well. The Terminators are way too big for 28mm, but the vehicles could do double duty in both scales. Along with Cobra, I'm going to work on the stats for these guys and play out a battle with a report to follow...

How I put together the army: I saw these action figure 2-packs at our two Family Dollars for $3 each, and these figures were smaller than the two sizes that were available at Wal-Mart and Target, so I picked a bunch up. Thier size is what gave me the idea to do this force with army men. I based them all and made weapons for them using guns and bits so two of them have heavy weapons and one has a flame thrower. I added the wire part so it looks like the weapons are powered by thier internal power plant...The HK I got on clearance at Target for 13.00 bucks, but here was the real find: When I was working at the old Wal-Mart, I was planning on buying two of the T-1s, they were 8.97 so I figured I'd wait till I had the extra cash. When I was setting up the new Supercenter I stopped in at the old Wal-Mart to see if my wall of Star Wars figs was still up (yeah! They let me make an endcap of nothing but Star Wars figs! When I was done it looked like 1980 all over again!) and remembered my T-1s...the Terminator figures had been knocked down to $3 (!) so I grabbed the last four...

Ah Finished up some projects...Here is my army men COBRA force to be used in Combat Storm! It consists of a ton of troopers, some specials like snipers, machine gunners and anti-armor troops, a Sidewinder APC and two Viper Tanks. I'm going to be working on the stats to use these guys in Combat Storm this week, so hopefully a battle and report will follow...

How I made the army: I washed the plastic army men in warm detergent, and then after they dried, I used gray stuff to sculpt masks over thier nose and mouth (that gets tedious fast!!!). Then I used Krylon Fusion Blue as the base coat. Then I drybrushed them in a medium blue, painted the guns, boots, staps and masks black, the part of the face showing in flesh color, then to top it all off painted Cobra insignias on thier chests. I took a couple plastic tanks and added an extra gun to them that came from some Humvee toys, and the APC is a scratchbuilt model that I cast in resin and added a missile rack that also came with the Humvee toys. Then I brushed on the "dip" and when dried, matte coated them all.

So, do you think I should convert a few more figures to represent Cobra Commander, the Baroness and Destro? Maybe I'll do some in red for the Crimson Guard....

Wow! Haven't had the time to update the ol blog...well, the job I was working for the past five years was going downhill fast and there wasn't enough work to make a living anymore, so I had to find something else fast. Lucky me, Wal-Mart was hiring, and I landed a 3rd shift job. A lot of my toy purchases have been from Wal-Mart over the years and I knew thier toy department pretty well. I got to be part of a team setting up the Supercenter that was going to be opening and got my own department-toys! So if any of you wargamers see a toy online that we probably stock and want to know how compatible it would be with your miniatures for gaming, drop me a line, I'll take a tape measure and some minis to do a comparison!

Build 10 Flats Terrain Project!

I found these packs of plastic Deca Build 10 flats at my local thrift store...30 for ninety cents! I also found 1 pack of solid blocks, wish they had more of those...here is what I did with this great find!

I glued these flats into 2's, 3's and 4's to make modular sidewalk city terrain...

Here are some buildings and walls I made for 28mm, I used plasticard for the rooftops and doors...

The blocks are going to be used for Kaiju, the neat thing is you can stack them for taller buildings, then I made two smaller buildings using the flats and some plasticard...

CLone Wars: Third Battle of Yavin 4

We played a Third battle on Yavin 4 using my mod for Combat Storm. This game gave me some ideas for adjusting stats and points, as well as some future rules additions. We also used alternating unit activation rather than I-go-you-go. It seemed to work out just fine. This fight saw as small force of Clones comprised of two 10-man squads of standard Clones, two Anti Armor Clones, a Clone Sharpshooter and two Clone Grenediers. They were also given a large battle cannon with a blast-2 radius that could be fired once per turn. The Clones started behind cover and Nick really didn't move them too far from thier original positions. I commanded the Droid invasion army consisting of two units of 20 B1 Battledroids each, one unit of 20 B2 Battledroids, ten Rocket Droids, one Hailfire Droid and two Homing Spider Droids.
During the battle the droids did a lot of running or walking and the Clones only had range with the cannon and Sharpshooter until the Droids got closer. Having anit-armor shells, the Sharpshooter aided the cannon to take out the droid vehicles before they got close enough. The Homing Spiders were able to take out some clones, I made a rule where the Homing Spider beam works like a template weapon hitting one Clone, and then you roll a D6 to see how many additional targets you hit that are within 3 inches of the first. That way it does a "sweep" with it's beam, and targets still get a reaction roll.
What was left of the Rocket Droids jumped to a Clone position in the third turn but being weak in close combat were taken out. The Clone Grenediers left thier position to throw EMP grenades at the droids before getting killed. The Clones won the day by having 10+ guys left at the end of the fourth turn, when reinforcements arrived. Score: Clones-2, Droids-1...

The talented and knowlegable Marie Post runs the table with a full compliment of Reaper Master Series paints to use as well as solutions to all your painting questions. If you are in the area, stop in on Paint Night, it's a regular Inn of the Last Home. Then come back on Friday for Open Game Night, I'm always looking for anyone interested in Combat Storm and my Clone Wars game, and Marie will be more than happy to introduce you to Warlord and host a demo game....

Ahhh, time for Pokemon Club again!

Another Pokemon Club meeting this past Monday at the Kenosha Southwest Library...now if you remember, last time the lady running the club told me that I couldn't trade cards with the kids in future meetings, so now my kids had to do the work...imagine my "suprise" when my 6 year old traded an SP Aerodactyl for a fire energy card. Well, she was excited. But she traded some other cards for some we didn't have, while I played solitaire Pokemon to see if the other kids would ask what I was doing, since no one actually plays the game at the club. No one asked. I think the kids just collect and trade and then play video games at home. The next Pokemon Club is on July 6 from 4:00- 5:00pm, so if anyone reading this is in Kenosha or nearby, stop in so I have someone to trade with!

Awwww...how sweet! Heaven (right) finds someone to trade with...someone who dosn't know the value of what she is trading...my kids learn fast!

Reaper Warlord Demo

Nick and I played our first Warlord game at Rockheads Friday night, Marie was running the game using the beta 2nd edition rules. I hadn't done Fantasy in years, and at first the table looked strange because there were no big vehicles and shooty guns....The good news: I like the game. The bad news: I like the game. Now I gots to gets crankinz on some Necropolis guys! Anyway the demo armies were Undead Pirates vs Crusaders, very nicely and expertly painted by the talented Marie. The rules were fast and furious...in close combat after you strike your opponent you might kill him but he isn't dead until the end of the turn so he get a defensive strike back. Once close combat happens, bodies will hit the floor. It took a little while for me to adjust, most of my fantasy games were hundreds of troops pushed forward with the ranks in the back there for moral support...In Warlord, every model counts and grunts become a real loss rather than "hey, it's just goblins, I got 50 more behind them..." The games we played had like 10 models a side and was as enjoyable as any mass game to me.
Marie is going to running more Warlord demos, so get to Rockheads if you're in the area and start stompin...

Clone Wars Update...Droid Factory

The Droid Factories have been working overtime...not content with leaving pre-painted plastic well enough alone, it was upgrade time. I posted the ways of my madness with the pics below...

The Homing Spiders were a squishy mess, so I removed them from thier large bases (I had to do some cutting, they really glue these things well!) and then I replaced the long part of thier soft legs with chopsticks cut to size and repositioned thier joints so they aren't in their original "huddled" pose.

I chopped up some of the Rocket Droids and glued them back together so they looked a little more dynamic then their original standing pose. Then I attached some wire to their backs and tore some cotton balls to make a smoke effect for their jump packs. I used orange and black inks for the color.

Being soft, the Snipers guns were bent in all directions, so I added some wire and putty and a paint touchup so the barrels look more straight now.

Here is a fresh group of B1 Battledroids, I painted some minwax polyshades on them to make them look more realistic but they were still sticky a few days later. I gave them a coat of gloss sealer, and then a coat of dullcoat and now they aren't sticky.

Rather than just inkwash the silver B2's, I mixed some Ultramarine and some Boltgun Metal and made them metallic Blue. The B2's were silver at Geonosis but then went a blue color so I thought these would look cool.

Finally, here are some IG-88 Assasin droids. I liked the pose they had, so I just altered two of them to make them look a little less uniform.

15mm F.R.O.G. Force

My first jump into 15mm! Get it? Jump? OK...I painted up those Critter Commandos 15mm Frogs and added some Grav vehicles made by Combat Wombat. The big mechs are from a toy range called M.A.R.S. that I grabbed at Menards for dirt cheap during an after Christmas sale in 2006. I repainted and based them and they kinda had that frog look to me. Now I'll have to paint up the Ratzis so they can fight it out...

Combat Storm Memorial Day Battle

Time to move the action outside! I've posted a map of the Tan city of Danturia on the Combat Storm Yahoo group hoping that the other members take a section of city to fight over so we can tally up the results. Not exactly a summer Games Workshop event, but I do what I can. So today The United Green sent a force to attack the city from the Northeast with the goal being the manufacturing section of the city which will be fought at a later date. The soldiers of Tanada weren't going to make it easy, and were ready with an outpost that the Green needed to hit before attacking the Northeast Base and then hopefully on to the factories. Here are some pics of the fighting...it was a Green victory (but we'll need some reinforcements for the next battle!)

Survived Another Pokemon Club...

Took the kids to the Kenosha Southwest Library for Pokemon Club, an hour of swapping cards, playing Pokemon games on the WII, and playing the card game (so I've heard...no one seems to actually play it there...) This is our second time at the Club, I got a bunch of doubles on eBay so we can trade with the other kids. Unfortunately, I was told at the end of club that next time I can't trade with the other kids anymore (I guess because the club is for K - 5th graders, and here I thought all the other parents were just sitting in the corners 'cause they were lazy or something...) so my girls are going to have to do all the work next time. The next Pokemon Club is at the SW Library on June 1st. Maybe I'll start my own club where parents bring thier kids' toys late at night and we swap all that stuff...

Have You Checked out Rockheads Lately?

I wasn't able to fight a game on Friday, so I thought I'd do a post about Rockheads here in Kenosha, WI. There has been some changes since Allen took over. All those old toys and clutter are gone, and the shop seems more focused on catering to the serious gamer or comic collector. Here are some pics I took one night, if you haven't stopped in for awhile come on by, and if you can make it in on a Friday night let me know so you can try out Combat Storm or get some action in my Clone Wars campaign. I often wrap the night up with a fun game of Toy Mallet too....

The middle of the store has a long row of tables to play on, here you see ToyMallet, Confrontation and Warhammer 40k games being played. There is also a large sellection of terrain handy so all you have to do is bring your army to the table.

Behind some people playing Magic (I know! I didn't realize folks still play that!) you can see a large selection of board games by Fantasy Flight and everyone in between, and racks with RPG modules and supplements.

Here is a wall dedicated to Warhammer, WH40K, Reaper Dark Heaven & Warlord, plus there is a great selection of minis from Future Wars, Anima Tactics, Impact Miniatures, Wargods of Aegyptus, etc. They also have tons of Games Workshop paints and inks, all the Reaper Master Series Triads you could want, plenty of brushes and tools, and a supply of ProCreate putty.

On the sides of a cabinet that features nicely painted miniatures and superhero statues are racks and stacks of new RPG releases, Confrontation, AT-43 and Warzone Pre-Paints, boxes and boosters of Star Wars Miniatures and Monsterpocalypse, LOTR box sets, all kinds of cool stuff.
OH YEAH!! I almost forgot....Near the back they have a whole bunch of racks of current and recent comic books from pretty much every publisher, plus a whole bunch of back issues. A comic guy is going to have to review all that, I'm not into comics anymore, my knowledge of Marvel history ends around the Acts of Vengeance crossovers back in 91 I think. So my warm fuzzy memories aren't tainted with all this dead one day, back next year stuff, Civil War stuff and all that...(but I thought the Marvel Zombies was cool as heck!)

Toymallet 40 Cents: Gators vs. Pachydon

After the Clone Wars fight newcomer Roy and I fought a Toymallet 40 Cents game using Blasted Planets minis made by Historifigs. I took command of the Pachydon which consisted of two squads and the Robo Elephant Walker of Big Stompy Doon (tm) and Roy used two squads of Gator Guys and 2 Gator Tanks. I made a rule mod of giving armor points to the vehicles so they wouldn't bite it with one hit. Both sides were given the missile launcher trait for thier uh, missile launchers...

Ah! The two sides meet in the swamps of Gatoraidia...Fearing a pre-emptive strike by the ravaging Gators, the Pachydon must strike now to prevent an invasion of Elephantitia!

Roy sends his Gator Guys and Gator Tanks forward to engage the biggest threat. This works in my favor because my Pachydon begin a crossfire and better position them...

Concentrating the Gator Tanks and a squad equipped with missile launcher troops, the Elephant Walker erupts in flames..WAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Knowing that there is a Gator tank with thier name on it, the Pachydon rush to find cover amongst the ruins.

The Pachydon take cover in some ruins and manage to wipe out the last Gator tank with a missile laucher! Pachydon Victory!

Combat Storm: Clone Wars Second Battle of Yavin 4

Ahh..Friday night at Rockheads...smells like a Clone Wars battle! Once again I took command of the CIS forces who were looking for revenge after losing last week's fight, Nick commanded the Clone army again confident in his force-dice powers...This weeks forces were similar to the last battle as I was tweaking the points for my Clone Wars mod of the Combat Storm rules. I think I've got the troop types in this battles' costs about right, now I can work on other troop types for future battles.

I painted some of HistoriFig's Blasted Planets figures awhile ago, but I really wanted some vehicles to go with them...so now they have some heavy support! They are going to get some ToyMallet 40 cents love real soon. My human troopers are getting some 33 cent robots painted up right now so they can join in the fun so hopefully I will be able to show those off real soon.

Combat Storm CLONE WARS

Played the first game of my Clone Wars mod for the Combat Storm rules at Rockheads, it worked out pretty well. Nick commanded the Clones and I took the Battledroids. This was the first battle on Yavin 4, the plan is to have several battles on each planet featured in the Star Wars Battlefront video games. The Republic Army consisted of two 10 man Clone squads, 2 Arc Trooper anti-armor, 1 Clone Speeder and 3 AT-RTs. The CIS consisted of two 10 B1 droid sqauds, one 10 B2 droid squad, 1 Snail Tank and 2 Crab Droids. The game seemed unbalanced at first with the CIS loosing a lot of troops to Clone Heavy weapons, but in later rounds the CIS came back when the Snail tank started dishing out punishment, the Crab Droids were making saves and the B1 and B2 battledroids outnumbered the Clones in close combat. The Clones managed to squeak in a victory. For anyone into Combat Storm I put a PDF file of the Troops used in the game on the Yahoo Group. THE BAD NEWS: I totally forgot my camera at home so I got a couple pics with my cruddy phone camera...

TOYMALLET 40 CENTS!!

I found it on the web and was pretty impressed with the game! So I gathered the family around today and we played a couple games; A battle between the Saurians and the Wormics/Greys, and then a Mars Attacks! ground battle. The rules ran simple and smoothly, you should check out the rules for fun.

Battle 1: Saurians VS Wormic/Greys

The setup for a battle between the Saurians and the Wormic/Grey Alliance. Saurians & Wormic from Acheson Creations, Greys from Mega Miniatures. I made the ruins and fuel the objectives to earn Happy Fun Time points to win....

The Greys ready to fight. I gave them the Teleport ability, and Tactical so with the +1 they win initiative....

The Greys secure the ruins early in the game....

Later, they teleport behind the Saurians and dish out some firepower. They also used a Tactical point to make the Saurians retreat so they couldn't be assaulted in close combat...

The infantry vehicle gets toasted by the Wormic who take position around the fuel supply, the Saurians find themselves hurting for firepower and were later surrounded and outnumbered in close combat. Grey and Wormic Victory!

Here is the setup, the Martians are moving into a city as Swat and Soldiers prepare a defense. Combat Storm Game at Rockheads
Headed up to Rockheads Comics & Games Friday for open gaming nite with my Combat Storm stuff. My buddy didn't show up, but lucky me I had brought my 6 year old daughter with me, so she took command of the Green Army and beat the heck outa my Tan soldiers. I'm going to keep running Combat Storm games at the shop, hopefully I'll generate a few local fans.

I painted these up a while ago, but thought I'd pimp them out for my pals at Acheson Creations. Here are Saurians' Combat Squad, Power Armor and Recon Bikes, and a bunch of Wormric Warriors. Everyone is always looking for new alien races to fight, so hopefully these will help someone out. I took a pic for size comparison with a Void Viridian Marine, WOTC Clone, and Space Marine.

Taking the idea from TMP postings, I made some sci-fi buildings from those plastic basket sets you can get a Walmart for a buck. I used black construction paper to cover the spaces between the bars so it looks like there is something inside, and some plastic bits for doors and tech.

Combat Storm at Little Wars after action

I ran a game of Combat Storm at Little Wars on Saturday, it was three hours of non stop shooting and tanks blowing up. Plus, it was the only game there where things actually moved on the tabletop. YEAH THAT"S RIGHT!!!! I've never been to a Historical Con, I mostly dig sci-fi but here is one thing I learned: now I see why Historical Miniatures players are so picky about the accuracy of the colors on thier figs...those minis are going to be on the table a looooooooong time....what does a turn take, 4 hours or somethin'? A table next to mine had a bunch of micro armor tanks fighting in the desert, and 4 hours later they were still on the far sides of the table, I guess all the tanks ran out of gas and ammo...just messin' around History guys!

Car Mat City Blocks

I took some old plastic car mats that are dark tan in color and cut them up. The buildings can sit on top of them and not only do you have instant city blocks but instant streets as well! I'll use these in my Combat Storm games at Little Wars tommorrow (Sat.) at 3:00 and 7:00 pm

I probably won't watch the game, I find it hard to watch TV for long periods of time, plus while I enjoy football, I haven't really been following it. But today I'm working on these styrofoam glider planes I found at the dollar store, I'm going to use them as objectives in my Combat Storm games...
